AI finds ‘potentially hazardous’ asteroid: All you may want to know

AI or artificial intelligence is being used extensively around the world. Now, scientists have found an asteroid with the help of an AI algorithm program.

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) program has found a 600-foot-wide asteroid that may approach the Earth 140,000 miles or 2,25,000 km. This distance is closer than the distance between the Earth and the moon. Thus, it is close enough to be called the Potentially Hazardous Asteroid or PHA. It may not collide with the Earth in the near future, but the discovery of the asteroid by an AI algorithm-powered program is significant.

What is ‘HelioLinc3D’?

Scientists and AI experts have developed the algorithm-based program called HelioLinc3D to help the astrologers and scientists of the Vera C Rubin Observatory, which is being constructed in the South American nation of Chile. It will carry out surveys of the night sky and search for asteroids near the Earth. The AI algorithm will identify the rocks that may collide with the Earth.

Explaining the algorithm, scientists of Vera C Rubin Observatory said in a statement, “By demonstrating the real-world effectiveness of the software that Rubin will use to look for thousands of yet-unknown potentially hazardous asteroids, the discovery of 2022 SF289 makes us all safer.”

Scientists believe that tens of thousands of rocks ranging from a small rock of a few feet length to dwarf stars of the size of our moon, roam the solar system. They are the remnants of the stars or materials that formed the planets some 4.5 billion years ago.

How was the new asteroid found?

The new PHA or Potentially Hazardous Asteroid was found when the asteroid AI was coupled with the ATLAS survey in Hawaii.

FAQs:

What is a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid or PHA?
An asteroid or a rock that roams the solar system and can come as close to the Earth as the distance between the Earth and the moon is called a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid or PHA.

What have the scientists found with the help of an AI-based program?
With the help of AI or Artificial Intelligence algorithms, scientists have found an asteroid that may approach the Earth 140,000 miles or 225,000 km. It is 600 ft wide and may not collide with the Earth in the near future.
